Ugandan: Bobi Wine’s party headquarters raided on independence day; party leaders, supporters arrested

In a shocking turn of events on Uganda’s 61st ‘independence’ day, the headquarters of Ugandan politician and prominent rights activist, Bobi Wine, were raided by police and the military.

The incident has escalated into a broader crackdown, resulting in the arrest of party leaders and supporters.

Bobi Wine disclosed this via his Facebook page on Monday.

Wine revealed that “Among those detained are the Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, and the party’s Spokesperson, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, along with numerous other comrades.”

They are currently being held at various Police Stations, including Kira Road in the city.

Bobi Wine, a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, within Uganda’s Central Region, has been a prominent figure in the nation’s political landscape.

This brazen act by law enforcement authorities has drawn widespread condemnation and has raised concerns about the state of democracy and civil liberties in Uganda.

The raid on Bobi Wine’s party headquarters appears to be a deliberate attempt to prevent the politician and his party from addressing the nation on this significant day.

Independence Day celebrations in Uganda traditionally mark the country’s liberation from colonial rule.

However, this incident has highlighted the tension and unrest that continues to persist in the nation’s political sphere.

Calls for resistance against what many perceive as an act of impunity have grown louder in the wake of these arrests.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with many human rights organizations expressing their concerns regarding the violation of political freedoms and the rule of law.

As the situation unfolds, there is an increasing demand for transparency, accountability, and the immediate release of all those detained. The actions taken by the Ugandan authorities on this historic day have raised questions about the direction of the nation’s political landscape and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
