Banjul Mayor Lowe partners UCLG World to organize back-to-school program after flood disaster

Mayor of Banjul City, Rohey Malick-Lowe, has partnered with UCLG World and REFELA to take students back to school after recent flood disaster that engulfed the entire city.

The Mayor of Banjul disclosed this via her official Facebook page after the event today, Thursday December 1, 2022.

“The City of Banjul was hit by a major flash flood disaster In August 2022, which affected several families, including students,” she said.

“These children lost everything – books, uniforms, school shoes…”

Lowe further noted that the disaster was a challenge for them to go back to school.

She appreciated partners like UCLGWorld under the leadership of a dynamic woman Emilia Saiz “who could not watch the situation without giving a helping hand.”

“Today, the students are all back to school. Thanks to the support from Madam Emilia Saiz, Secretary General of the United Cities and Local Government World, who ensured she put a smile on the faces of our children.

“This city wish to express their appreciation to Madam Saiz for the kind gesture and promise to work hard in school to obtain good results, knowing that they will in turn make her proud of them,” Lowe stated.

Mayor Rohey Malick-Lowe is the first and only elected female mayor in The Gambia. She is popularly called the mayor of the masses because her unique open door leadership style that gives room for all residents in Banjul to have access to her at all time. She is also known for fighting for gender equity and access to basic amenities for the masses.
