Hundreds of Nigerians took to the streets of Lagos on Thursday to demand a thorough investigation into the untimely demise of rising Afrobeats star, MohBad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba. The 27-year-old singer and rapper, known for hits like “Feel Good,” passed away suddenly last Tuesday, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s vibrant Afrobeats music scene.
The circumstances surrounding MohBad’s death have remained shrouded in mystery, fueling widespread speculation and grief among his fans and fellow artists. “I’m mentally drained. I feel so sad that someone could be bullied to this point, and they take his life,” lamented Mama J, a fashion designer.
Social media in Nigeria has been inundated with expressions of outrage and sorrow over MohBad’s tragic passing. Some have even alleged that he may have been subjected to harassment by influential figures within the country’s music industry.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Lagos State police announced on Monday the establishment of a dedicated investigative team to ensure a “fair and transparent investigation” into the circumstances of MohBad’s death. “Nobody deserves to die at 27 like this, nobody deserves to die an untimely death, nobody deserves to die without knowing the cause,” emphasized Eltee Skahillz, another prominent Afrobeat artist, echoing the sentiments of many in the creative community.
MohBad’s meteoric rise to fame began in 2019 when he was signed by the renowned record label of Naira Marley, a leading figure in Nigeria’s music scene. However, their partnership came to an end in 2022 due to disagreements, raising questions about the nature of their parting.
In the wake of the tragedy, online activists and fans have initiated an online petition with over 250,000 signatures, pointing fingers at MohBad’s team and calling for a thorough investigation into his death.
As Nigerians mourn the loss of a promising talent, the nation awaits the findings of the special investigative team and hopes for answers that can provide closure to a grieving nation.
