In a significant counterterrorism operation, the Nigerian Air Force announced on Sunday that it had successfully conducted a series of air interdiction missions that resulted in the elimination of numerous terrorists across different regions.
The missions were executed by the Air Components of Operations Hadin Kai and Hadarin Daji, specifically targeting a newly identified terrorist hideout near the Lake Chad region in Borno, at Bukar Meram.
Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, explained that the airstrikes were initiated in response to intelligence reports suggesting the recent relocation of terrorists from Suwa to the Bukar Meram area.
This relocation was seen as a potential prelude to renewed attacks on both Nigerian ground troops and innocent civilians.
According to Gabkwet, the airstrikes achieved their intended objectives.
He reported that several terrorists were neutralized, and a significant cache of enemy assets was destroyed during the operation.
“Feedback received after the strikes revealed the expected outcome was achieved as several terrorists were neutralized while over 40 motorcycles and six gun trucks were destroyed,” he said.
The airstrikes were authorized in Bukar Meram to significantly weaken the terrorist presence in the area.
This success comes on the heels of another operation on October 11, where the Air Component of Operation Haradin Daji conducted airstrikes in the Sangeko axis of the Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara.
During this operation, a convoy of terrorists, numbering approximately 70, who were traveling on motorcycles from Kabaro towards Sangeko, were intercepted and engaged.
The result was a substantial number of terrorists neutralized, their motorcycles destroyed, and several others left injured.
Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet conveyed the commendation of Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, praising the professionalism and dedication of the Air Components involved in these operations.
He quoted Air Marshal Abubakar as saying, “Your efforts and support to the ground troops are commendable. Stay focused and do not be complacent as we must continue to give our citizens the confidence they deserve to thrive.”
These successful air operations represent a significant blow to terrorist activities in the affected regions, highlighting the continued commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to securing the nation and protecting its citizens from security threats.
