DepEd celebrates success, students thrive, engage under innovative MATATAG K-10 curriculum

In a groundbreaking development, the Philippines Department of Education (DepEd) revealed on Friday that students are exhibiting a remarkable increase in attentiveness and participation under the newly introduced MATATAG K-10 curriculum.

The preliminary assessment conducted by the department indicates a positive shift in the learning environment, highlighting the benefits of the streamlined curriculum.

DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa shared insights during an interview on CNN Philippines’ The Source, stating, “With the decongested curriculum, the feedback we’re getting is learners are more attentive, they participate more, they volunteer more.”

The encouraging observations are derived from field assessments, with students actively engaging in classroom activities.

This positive trend has prompted the DepEd to collaborate with the Philippine Institute for Development Studies for a comprehensive study to delve deeper into the impact and effectiveness of the K-10 program.

Implemented as a pilot initiative on September 25, the MATATAG curriculum was introduced in 35 selected schools across different regions.

The success of this initial phase has paved the way for a phased rollout plan, targeting Grade levels 1, 4, and 7 in the upcoming school year 2024-2025. Subsequent phases will include Grades 2, 5, and 8 in 2025-2026, Grades 3, 6, and 9 in 2026-2027, and finally, Grade 10 in 2027-2028.

Michael Poa emphasized the commitment of DepEd to closely monitor the implementation of the MATATAG curriculum, underscoring the department’s readiness to make necessary adjustments for continuous improvement.

In parallel, Poa provided an update on the ongoing review of the senior high school program. The national task force overseeing the assessment is anticipated to release its initial recommendations by May next year.

This signals a proactive approach by DepEd to ensure the holistic enhancement of the education system, reflecting its dedication to fostering an environment conducive to effective learning and student engagement.
